I thought it was a bird (says something about me, no ?) but hubby said, hell no - that's a penis (very loud, he would say the words crushed and balls later on during our holiday - he forgot only we speak Flemish and most of the other tourists in Italy English).
I had to give him the benefit of the doubt and yes in fact it was a fallus-symbol ; that doesn't mean it's the red-light district of Pompeii ; it brings wealth and good fortune to once house.

Mary Beard has just published this book as we came back from our Italy adventure. I bought her book today.
I always wanted to visit Pompeii, after listening to my history teacher when I was a teenager. History was one of my favourite subjects in school. Later on, a serie called The Last days of Pompeii back in 1984, hit our screens and I was even more intrigued by the tragic event in AD 79.
Now, as a lot of things, the story of Pompeii is over-romanticized. Mary Beard has written this book to explain how life really must have been in Pompeii and what possibly really happened.
She teaches in Cambridge and is editor 'classicals' for the The Times Literary Supplement.
